Gipuzkoa Nodal

Gipuzkoa Nodal is a research project under the Etorkizuna Eraikiz Misioak 2024 call by the Gipuzkoa Provincial Council, carried out in collaboration with the CAVIAR research group at UPV/EHU. It starts from the premise that public transport networks today face an urban reality that is entirely different from the one in which they were originally conceived.

The project develops tools—both conceptual and technical—to rethink the mobility network of Gipuzkoa, taking into account both current and near-future infrastructures, from an intermodal perspective.

To that end, a conceptual tool has been developed based on the notion of the node: we believe that the efficiency of public transport and its capacity to structure the territory depends on understanding the territory as a system of interconnected nodes. Building on this conceptual tool, a technical tool has been designed in the form of a model-algorithm applied to an Urban-Territorial Digital Twin, which, through modeling and numerical relationships between variables, identifies:

existing centralities or nodes in the territory,

potential centralities or nodes that could emerge,

the attributes of these nodes, and

a taxonomy to help categorize and rank them.

Through the project, a network of relationships has been established with various actors, including the City Hall of Oiartzun, the Syndicat des Mobilités Pays Basque Adour, City Science Lab Gipuzkoa, the Gipuzkoa Transport Authority, Jarrett Walker + Associates, and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC).
